Top Apps for the Working Mom {Productivity Edition}

Apps for Working MomsIt is kinda known around the LWM round table that I am the nerd of the bunch. I am cool with that. I have been a nerd all my life and married one. My son? Has his own iPhone at 2. We own iPads, iPhones and are pretty much a walking Apple ad. So? Imma embrace it.

I have had a smart phone since before Landon was born and boy howdy am I glad I did. I gave regular birth updates through email the whole time. I posted to Facebook within minutes. It kept me busy in those late night nursing sessions and the reason I joined Twitter. Technology has been an integral part of my journey in motherhood. I have made best friends ::waves to Alicia and Brandee::, blogged, photographed Landon’s childhood and even spiced up my marriage with this simple little bundle of glass and microprocessors (see imma nerd).

I get asked about apps I use all the time. I have my staples and my nerdy husband knows even more than me. So I am going to start documenting some of my apps that make my mom life easier.

Today’s edition: Productivity & Organization

App: Wunderlist

Price:
Free!

Devices: iOS, Android, Blackberry, Windows and Mac

This app is for making lists. Pretty simple right? Nothing flashy…not a lot of bells and whistles. Just lists but that is the beauty. I can make lists for everything AND share them. For instance, Kevin and I share the grocery list. When either of us sees something we need, we whip out our phones and add it to the list. Then the one shopping can look and BAM everything is there. I also use lists to make to dos for the day (work and personal), post ideas, and even baby names! The interface is very easy to use. Just add items and then check them off. The app itself is very sleek and simple in design. A list of lists is the main screen and there are few options. It’s quick, it’s easy. Working mom dream. There is reminder functionality and ways to make it alert you but you can ignore them of you want. I use way less little post it notes now. My purse thanks me.Also to note, you don’t even need a mobile device. It is also a free web service. So just sign in there and manage your lists. Then you can view and edit the same items on your phone or tablet later. HOORAY!

EvernoteApp: Evernote

Price: Free!

Devices: iOS, Android, Windows Phone, Blackberry, Windows and Mac

An a-lister in the app world, Evernote is what it sounds like: keeper of the notes. The possibilities are really pretty endless. Write up anything you want to be with you anywhere. Emergency contact list, directions to run the 5 remotes in the house ::side eye to husband::, cool recipes you find, work documents, planning documents, etc. This is taking Wunderlist to the next level. You can keep long documents, photos, and audio.

You can also share notes and work with others. Share a blog post idea with your team, even. There are also browser plugins and even an associated email address for your account so you can just send an item straight to Evernote for keeping. No copy/paste needed.

This app also has potential for web updating through browsers and desktop applications. Through the cloud, all your items are automatically synced. So when you get home and need that work document to look over, BAM. Find a cool recipe while surfing on your lunch break? BOOM saved.

DropboxApp: Dropbox

Price: Free with paid extra storage!

Devices: iOS, Android, Windows Phone, Blackberry, Windows and Mac

Dropbox is another heavy hitter in the productivity department. Take Evernote to the NEXT level. Straight up file sharing. No editor or anything…pure storage. You really should have this. It has helped me in so many ways. I keep working Photoshop files for blog graphics in mine so I can be anywhere and reference it. I also have a process set up to store all my Instagram photos right as I take them. If I know I am going to need something when I get to work, I don’t bother with flash drives anymore…just throw it in Dropbox and get it wherever. Phone, iPad, desktop and web. It is really is ANYWHERE.

Once again, you can share folders. This works great if you have a directory of files you need to share with someone and not enough email quota. Take some photos and need to share the files with a friend? Here ya go. Need to keep a backup of your contacts somewhere and share with your husband? WHA BAM!

You get 2 GB worth of storage for free and can get more for various things like referrals and special promotions. You can see their paid options here.

So there ya go. A few apps to get you going…all at no cost! Hopefully one or more of these apps will make you go “Ah ha!” and get your life more organized.

I hope to keep this series going so I want to hear from you! What kind of apps are you most interested in? I am happy to do the research (or sick my husband on it) to save you some time. Just let me know!

I too, use these apps on a regular basis. I wish I could get my husband on board with the grocery list…

Also, if your child has an iPhone already, what apps have you downloaded for him? I’m always looking for new apps for the kiddo, who can navigate the technology better than many adults…

I couldn’t survive without my iPhone. And now all three of my kiddos have iPads. Worth every penny for the sanity it brings me!

I think a post on kid apps, photo apps, etc. would be good. I always love to find great posts with new apps to try!

  4. Yay, I already have all of these! I’m going to try to get into Wunderlist/Wunderkit. I’ve got so much going on that I can’t really set aside time to dig in, but I really like the concept.

I love those! I also love Cozi – it’s a great way to keep track of everyone’s schedule and has a shopping and to do list section, too. It interfaces with a website so I can check it anywhere, not just my phone. =)
