Chocolate For Breakfast is Good For You

Yup. You heard it here folks. Chocolate for breakfast is good for you…well your well-being.

A couple of weeks ago, a series of things happened one Friday morning that had just Landon and I leaving the house about 30 minutes ahead of schedule. We usually carpool but the husband had an early Dr. appointment that left me flying solo. So thinking on my feet, I said, “Landon! Let’s go get special treats!” Of course he lit up at the thought and off we went.

I wanted a fancy coffee and some fun grub. Fortunately for me, we have a Starbucks in one of our cafes that serves breakfast here on campus (yes, I hear you glaring at me through the screen). They make fresh breakfast and have fun treats. I let him loose in the deserted Starbucks (which was really weird…where was everyone?) and said “pick what you want.” He ran to the little glass case and said, “Mommy I want THAT one!” It was a precious little chocolate mousse. It cost 75 cent and had that boy doing his excited dance. He walked with me to get a fresh blueberry bagel, fruit and my Chai Latte and we sat down at the couches like 2 little kids and pigged out.

He stole my fruit. He made a giant mess on his face. I was a little late to work but ya know what? It was totally worth it.  As a working mom, we don’t get many opportunities to just live in the moment and do something spontaneous. Everything is a routine and strategically planned…because it has to be (said the type A mom). So when life hands you an early morning, live it up.  Have chocolate mousse for breakfast.

Do you ever find yourself breaking routines to live it up a bit? We’d love to hear your stories too!

I try to do this with Allan once or twice a month for either breakfast or lunch. We end up with a lot of Mommy & Me time because of my husband’s work schedule and every now I can feel like we’ve fallen into a boring morning routine. So yeah – eat chocolate, or donuts, or Chick Fil A….

This is a good idea and a great reminder to enjoy those moments. :) I struggle with the logistics of getting my three where I want them and hoping that they will behave, but in the end, it’s the happiness that will make the memory!

When my daughter took two naps a day and would occassionally wake up at 5:30 am or so on a Friday, I would quickly get ready and we would go to breakfast before heading into work. Now, she sleeps until the last possible minute so those chances are limited. I try to schedule a haircut for her during the day so we can do a fun lunch or grab breakfast or lunch some place fun when we go grocery shopping. We seem to have the most fun on those trips!

I make it a point to get up early at least once/twice a week so that I can spend an extra 20 minutes playing and snuggling with my toddler before bringing him to daycare. Most mornings, he plays/watches Sprout/hangs on my leg while I try and put my face on, feed the dog, get us ready and out the door … It is nice to break the routine and slow down on purpose. It is also really important because such moments are fleeting and our babes are only little once.

This sounds like so much fun! I will have to try to find something fun to do with my son. There is a cupcakery a block from daycare. Maybe I can pick him up early one day and head over for a treat. Spoils dinner, but you only live once!

  7. That’s a tough one… mornings are not a good time for us, and the hour after daycare pickup is usually not so great. I think maybe I’ll try to work out some a.m. fun – not spontaneity. At 3, my daughter is not a fan.
